Is Your Water Making You Sick?
You can find out the temperature of your hot tap water by using a meat or candy thermometer. Turn on the hot water faucet and let the water run for a few minutes. Then test the water temperature. Repeat at other faucets and showerheads throughout the house; the water from faucets and showerheads nearest the water heater may be hotter than those further away.

What your results mean:

120 degrees or lower. Your tap water isn't scalding hot. But unless your water heater uses a mixing valve to cool your hot tap water to this temperature, it could harbor legionella bacteria.

140 degrees or higher. Your hot tap water poses a dangerous risk of scald burns. Do not delay! Add a mixing valve to bring your hot tap water down to a safe temperature, while preventing bacteria in your water heater.
